Spain in the past, was Catholic, and still remain parties and others things, for example the Dicember 28th, known by the name Massacre of the Innocents, in memory of the massacre made by Herod attempting to murder Jesus Christ.

Over the time this has become a “Social day” where the people make jokes, there in the U.S., you have the April fools day that is similar (not historically, but in social function)
